Quant Question QGV37

Hello,

I was wondering if I could get more clarity on one part of the explanation for question QGV37:

https://app.achievable.me/study/gre-v2/quiz/QGV37#seed=6KQK7&slug=a-student-took-12-quizzes-throughout-the-course-of-the-semeste…

Particularly, I am not quite understanding why one of the values can’t be higher than the original average, as long as it is not higher than the new average?

Hi @Traci_Labadie, consider a situation where you have three scores: 40, 50, and 60.

The average of these three scores is 50.

  • If you drop the lowest score, 40, the average will rise to 55
  • If you drop the highest score, 60, the average will fall to 45

This is generalizable to any situation:

  • If you drop any number lower than the average, the average will rise
  • If you drop any number higher than the average, the average will fall

I hope this helps! Please let me know if I can clarify further~

Hi Justin,

Thanks for your reply. I understand the concept behind your explanation, but I was thinking in the particular question, if the original average is 77, couldn’t there be a situation where the lowest three numbers are 0, 54, and 78, and all of the other nine numbers are 88 (the new average)?

Thanks!

Good point! I think you’re correct; it seems like you have crafted a situation where this is possible.

I’ve reviewed this with our lead instructor, and the question was meant to say “higher than the new average” - I’ve just corrected this.

Thanks again for letting us know about this!
