In need of guidance as someone new to the finance industry

Hello all,

I am new to the finance industry and I am looking to get a job, even though I do not have a degree in Finance, or much experience in that industry. My background is in Television and Broadcast Journalism, and I have spent the first 8+ years of my career working for companies like FOX Sports, ABC, and TMZ. I have decided that 2025 will be the year that I make the switch from TV production into finance. I am currently studying on achievable to pass my SIE exam, however I am having some troubling figuring out what a good entry level role is for me to begin my journey, and which companies are the best for training people who are new to the industry. I live in Los Angeles, so I am looking for a job that can offer a decent/livable wage, sponsor me for the Series 7 and other exams, and will eventually put me on the right track towards becoming a successful Financial Advisor. I have a bachelors degree, 8+ years experience in high pressure office settings, and I believe I posses many of the soft skills needed to make the transition. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Welcome, and congrats on your start toward a career in finance!

I recommend looking at the major common names, such as Chase, Fidelity, Schwab, etc., as they’re usually the ones who have the budget and training programs to hire folks new to the industry.

It sounds like you’re most interested in “wealth management” roles, but you could consider going more of an investment advisor path too!

Thanks for the response Justin! Do you have any tips of tricks for helping to get a job at one of the companies you mentioned before? Like how my resume should look and if there is anything specific I should highlight when applying?

It’s good to emphasize your soft skills in addition to the traditional stuff! These roles are becoming more and more customer-focused as the heavy lifting is done by software, so you want to show that you’re someone they can trust to handle high-value clients.
